Film Review

Of the three of us, I like to think that I probably the most experimental with my film choices. I tend to gravitate toward the independent films and the films that are a little bit off the beaten path. Every once in a while I hit upon a movie that strikes a nerve with me for some reason. I will find a movie that provokes an extreme reaction from people. I will start reading reviews that start off with "the most horrible thing I have ever seen." Once I read that I am hooked. It becomes an obsession with me until I see it. It's almost as those I need to test myself and see if I can take it. This has led me to some dark, dark movies. This is a path that leads you to places like Cannibal Holocaust or Irreversible. Well this time it led me to Begotten.I don't even know where to begin with this movie. It is pretty simply a 78 minute all-out assault on your senses. It's dark, hopeless, and devoid of any relief from start to finish. Begotten is designed to shock and i…

Directed by E. Elias Merhige "Begotten" is an experiment with a few interesting ideas that don't quite succeed in what they were trying to do. The film is a 76 minute ultra slow, questionably effective, irritating experience that tries to present an intriguing philosophy about the creation of the Earth and human nature. It opens with god presented as a chair-bound psychopathic man who tears open his stomach using a knife. From the guts, blood and human waste Mother Nature emerges. She proceeds to impregnate herself with the dead god's semen. Later she gives birth to the Son of the Earth. A retard who is constantly abused a group of cannibalistic people whom I believe to be the representation of mankind."Begotten" takes a twisted and disturbing look on the origin of life. Demonstrating the self-destructive nature, violence, lust and greed that have become a trademark for mankind. The problem in the movie come from two points. One is that the film is just too …

Begotten is a movie you're either going to love or hate. It's an experimental horror film, using only visuals to tell a story and shock the viewer. The sound of chirping crickets, combined with other noises such as water dripping, is all the audio you're going to get here. There is one piece of music you'll get on occasion, but it too is minimal and doesn't play that long. The plot is basically a retelling of the story of Genesis, but in a skewed and bizarre manner. If you don't know what the plot is beforehand, you're going to be extremely confused as to what is occurring. However, maybe this is better, as it allows you to mold your own ideas. Even if you know the plot, you'll never be 100% sure of what you're looking at, due to the high contrast and grainy picture. This causes the viewer to use his/her imagination to establish just what is going on. I read somewhere that the director described the movie being like a Rorschach test, and I c…
